The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

"Is any among you sick? Let them call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."

James 5:14

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a precious gift of the Church, bringing strength, peace, and comfort to those experiencing illness—whether in body, mind, or spirit. Through this sacrament, Christ himself draws near to the suffering, offering His healing grace.

When Can I Receive the Anointing of the Sick?

You may receive the sacrament:

  • Before undergoing surgery with general anesthesia
  • In cases of serious illness or injury
  • Due to the effects of aging
  • More than once, whenever a new illness or condition arises

Emergency Last Rites

If there is immediate danger of death, please call our parish office right away: 760-689-6200

For non-emergency anointing, please use the same number to schedule a visit from a priest.

How Is It Celebrated?

  • The priest anoints the forehead and hands with holy oil (Roman Rite).
  • The anointing is accompanied by a special liturgical prayer for God’s grace (CCC 1531).
  • This sacred action mirrors the mission Jesus gave to His apostles:
“They anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.” (Mark 6:13)
