What is Confirmation?
Baptism, the Eucharist and the sacrament of Confirmation together make up the “Sacraments of Christian Initiation”. The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. By the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. They become true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.
Who can be Confirmed?
Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should be confirmed. The minimum age for the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is 15 for those already baptized and not confirmed. The policy of the parish is to accept candidates for Confirmation who are in the ninth grade, up to age 17. Those who are 18 years of age are to be enrolled in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program.
Preparation for Confirmation
The two-year preparation process aims to lead the candidate to a more intimate union with Christ and more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts and his biddings – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life.
The catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church, the universal Church, as well as the parish community.
